BIOINDUSTRY
Thematic Line Coordinator – Filipe Mergulhão

The BioIndustry line comprises two thrust areas: 1) Biofilms and Biofluids; and 2) Marine and Food Biotechnology. Biofilms are microbial communities, usually adhered to surfaces, with an impact on environmental, industrial and medical sectors. By understanding the fundamentals behind microbial adhesion, biofilm formation, and the characteristics of the biofluids surrounding them (particularly their rheology), we will produce new anti-fouling sustainable surface materials, develop new approaches to target antibiotic-resistant bacteria and design more eco-friendly disinfection processes. Marine and food biotechnology focuses on the re(use) and upgrade of sustainable resources from both land and seas through dedicated bioprocesses. Land and marine organisms (particularly microalgae) will be used to produce nutraceutical compounds for pharmaceuticals, food, feed, cosmetics, biofuels and biofertilizers.
