Filipe Mergulhão is a Chemical Engineer with a PhD in Biotechnology from Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon, Portugal). He is an Associate Professor at Universidade do Porto/Faculdade de Engenharia.  He is the Director of the Doctoral Program in Chemical and Biological Engineering and the Deputy Director of the Bachelor and Master programs in Bioengineering. He leads the Biotechnology group of LEPABE (Laboratorio de Engenharia de Processos Ambiente Biotecnologia e Energia) and the Bioindustry line of ALICE. His main research activities are in the area of Biofilms, particularly with applications in the Industrial (mainly Food industry), Medical (mainly biomedical devices and implants), and Environmental (primarily marine biofilms) sectors. His research involves surface engineering (using biomimetic topographies, carbon materials and natural compounds) and in vitro testing in controlled hydrodynamic conditions.
