Catalysis, Photocatalysis and Carbon Materials
Coordinator: Fernando Pereira
Objectives
The group develops nanostructured carbon materials, novel catalysts and photocatalysts for application in environmental catalysis, synthesis of chemicals and fuels, energy conversion and storage, and innovative functional materials, including functional textiles, carbon-based membranes, and carbon sensors.
Major research topics
Fabrication of nanostructured carbon materials, ranging from nanosized to porous carbons with tuned textural and surface chemical properties

Design of catalysts, from the nano to the macroscale, to remove pollutants from gaseous and liquid streams

Development of new catalysts and technologies for the sustainable production of fuels and chemicals, including biomass conversion into platform chemicals and biofuels

Development of advanced photocatalysts for environment protection and climate change mitigation, solar fuels and energy conversion, chemical synthesis, and chemical energy storage

Engineering of biocatalysts for health applications concerning therapy, synthesis and purification

Electrocatalysts and carbon electrodes for energy conversion and storage
