Project GREENSHIP_E
20/12/2024
The project GREENSHIP_E - Electrification of Ships Using Green Fuels and Advanced Technologies, led by Professor Alexandra Pinto from ALiCE/CEFT, is an interdisciplinary project that involves researchers from ALiCE (CEFT, LEPABE and LSRE-LCM), in partnership with SYSTEC and INESC-TEC.
This project’s main objective is the development and implementation of green fuel production systems on small vessels, through the safe and clean production and storage of hydrogen on board. This project takes the technological readiness of zero-emission maritime transport, particularly recreational and fishing vessels, to a new level. At the end of the project, an integrated electrified solution (TRL7) is expected to be developed and delivered, which includes a clean, plug-and-play and safe process to generate and storage pure hydrogen on board to power fuel cells, as well as a new intelligent electrification system (based on AI) validated and demonstrated for optimized fuel consumption management, emissions minimization and cost reduction.
It is important to mention the interdisciplinary nature of the team, that brings together all the skills necessary to achieve the project's objectives, and relevance and interest of this topic in the decarbonization strategy of the maritime sector, which is very important for Portugal strategy towards Energy policies.
Founded in 1.5 M€ by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the project contract signature took place on December 16th, 2024, at the University of Porto Rectorate building and counted with the presence of Alexandra Pinto, Coordinator of the project, Rui Calçada, Dean of FEUP, António de Sousa Pereira, Rector of the University of Porto, and from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, António Feijó and António Cruz Serra.
