ALiCE present at Encontro Ciência’22

ALiCE researchers were present at Encontro Ciência 2022, that took place on May 16 - 18th, at Lisbon Congress Center. Organised by FCT, this year’s theme was “Building a future with science”.
ALiCE was represented with a stand where the demonstrations TechMix – Novel technologies for mixing (António Ferreira and Yaidelin Manrique) and H2 to PEM – Hydrogen generation through the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride (Hélder Nunes) kept the attention of the attending public. During the 3 days of the event, 4 oral communications were presented by ALiCE members: Rita Lado, Idelfonso Nogueira, António Ferreira, and Anabela Borges. The Board of Directors and the Science & Technology office members (José Avelino and Diana Paiva) were also present.

ALiCE present at VII ENEEQ

ALiCE was a silver sponsor through its research units, LEPABE, LSRE-LCM and CEFT, of the VII edition of ENEEQ that took place on April 12-15th, at FEUP main Auditorium.
Organized by NEEQ-FEUP (Nucleus of Chemical Engineering Students of FEUP), this year’s theme was “Catalyse the Future”. The National Meeting of Chemical Engineering Students (ENEEQ) aims to bring together chemical engineering students at a national level, promoting their interaction and exchange of experiences, taking into account the different realities experienced in the various national higher education institutions.

ALiCE present at XI Fórum do Ambiente

ALiCE was a scientific sponsor of the XI edition of “Fórum do Ambiente”, that took place on April 5th, at FEUP main Auditorium.
Organized by NEEA-FEUP (Nucleus of Environmental Engineering Students of FEUP), this year’s theme was “Environment: a Boost for Innovation”. This forum provides its participants awareness in different action areas of Environmental Engineering, through the sharing of scientific knowledge, professional experiences and dialogue between guest speakers and the public present.

ALiCE kick-off meeting

The kick-off meeting of ALiCE, the recently created Associate Laboratory in Chemical Engineering, took place on January 21st, at FEUP Main Auditorium. During the event, ALiCE members and invitees got to know ALiCE main objectives and mission and its organisation in research thematic lines.
The ALiCE consortium, is composed by LEPABE, LSRE-LCM and CEFT, three R&D Units based at the Department of Chemical Engineering at FEUP. The Associate Laboratory status is attributed, through highly competitive calls, to institutions or consortia of scientific institutions that make institutional commitments to carry out the country's scientific and technological policy objectives.
Prof. Pedro Rodrigues (Vice-Rector of U.Porto), Prof. João Falcão e Cunha (Director of FEUP) and Prof. Nuno Rodrigues (Vice-Director of IPLeiria) were present at the meeting and addressed ALiCE members with kind and motivational words. ALiCE is thankful for all the support from U.Porto and FEUP in achieving this goal.
ALiCE team is proud of the accomplishments made so far and wishes all the success for ALiCE members in the future!
90 segundos de Ciência Podcast: Maria José Sampaio

Six new permanent researchers of ALiCE

Six researchers were recently hired as permanent researchers under the scope of ALiCE: Dr. Nuno Ratola as Principal Researcher, and Dr. Daniela Falcão, Dr. José Carlos Pires, Dr. Raquel Cristovão, Dr. Sofia Sousa and Dr. Vânia Oliveira as Assistant Researchers.
These contracts are in line with ALiCE’s commitment to recruit and retain researchers of high scientific merit, as part of the Associate Laboratory strategy to foster the development of scientific careers.
Three ALiCE researchers have been distinguished by Clarivate

Prof. Manuel Simões,researcher of LEPABE, Prof. Adrián Silva and Dr. Ana Rita Ribeiro, researchers of LSRE-LCM, were recognised as Highly Cited Researcher 2021 by Clarivate - Web of Science.
This is a recognition of the true pioneers in their fields over the last decade, demonstrated by the production of multiple highly-cited papers that rank in the top 1 % through citations by field and year in the Web of Science.
ALiCE researchers are among the 16 scientists recognised at national level, and are part of the 4 scientists belonging to the University of Porto.

Research in Chemical Engineering at U.Porto among the best worldwide

The 2021 edition of the prestigious NTU Ranking, places research in Chemical Engineering at the University of Porto within the top 100 (74th position) worldwide. U.Porto keeps its leading position at the national level and appears in the top 15 (11th position) among the European universities.
ALiCE researchers contributed highly for this outcome; research in Chemical Engineering at U.Porto is mostly performed in the Chemical Engineering Department at FEUP and within the 3 R&D Units that constitute this Associate Laboratory.
The NTU ranking is based on the evaluation of more than 4000 universities around the world and takes into account the productivity, impact and excellence of scientific research produced by different institutions in the last 11 years (2010-2020).

Here, he talks about the role of catalysis in chemical reactions. In the quest for more sustainable technologies, he has developed the application of carbon materials as catalysts in the fields of water treatment, energy storage and conversion, and production of platform chemicals and fuels from biomass.

Workshop - Introducing ALICE: Take a virtual tour of our Labs and meet our researchers

The new Associate Laboratory in Chemical Engineering, ALiCE, will be present at DCE21, the 4th Doctoral Congress in Engineering.
This workshop aims to introduce the participants to our laboratories and our research strategies.
The workshop is divided into five short sessions, representing the 5 Thematic Lines of ALiCE: Chemical Industry, Bioindustry, Materials, Energy and Environment. It includes a 5-minute video with a virtual tour of our R&D laboratories and short-talks by the leaders of the thematic lines.
